⭐️KILIMANJARO UMBWE 6 DAY TREK⭐️
The Southern Glaciers, Western Breach, and Uhuru Peak can all be reached by shorter, more direct paths via this steep route. It is likely the most picturesque and straightforward path on Kilimanjaro. The relatively quick ascent to higher altitudes is mostly the cause for how difficult it is, but the pleasures are bountiful. This route is very steep and best taken by experienced hikers. Not many people trek this route. Only persons with substantial mountain climbing experience should attempt the Umbwe route.
Duration: 6 days
Difficulty: Very High

Itineraries
Day 1
UMBWE GATE – UMBWE CAVE: 9.6KM/6MI | 6-8HRS | MOORLAND Elevation: 1651m/5417ft to 2944m/9659ft Altitude gained: 1293m
You can reach the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate after a 45-minute journey from Moshi through welcoming mountainside villages. We will wait patiently for the issuance of our permits while seeing the flurry of activity as other crews get ready for the voyage ahead.
As well as enjoy the beautiful rainforest scenery and windy trails while your guide tells you about the local flora and fauna and natural wildlife. The trail can be rather muddy and treacherous at these lower altitudes. Trekking poles and gaiters are highly advised.
The route follows a ridge between two deep valleys up through the dense montane forest. The camp is perched between huge trees and thick undergrowth.
Day 2
UMBWE CAVE – BARRANCO CAMP: 4.75KM/3MI | 4-6HRS | MOORLAND Elevation: 2944m/9659ft to 3986m/13,077ft Altitude gained: 1042m
Following a restful night's sleep and a filling breakfast, we leave the rain forest and continue on a steep ascending path along the Umbwe ridge as it descends slightly to Barranco campgrounds situated in the valley. At this point, the weather starts to get colder.
Day 3
BARRANCO CAMP – KARANGA CAMP: 5.2KM/3MI | 3-4HRS | ALPINE DESERT Elevation: 3986m/13,077ft to 4034m/13,235ft Altitude gained: 48m
Following breakfast, we continue on a steep ridge up to the thrilling Barranco Wall until we reach the Karanga Valley and the junction, which connects with the Mweka Trail.
One of the most astounding things about today is watching your crew's strength, speed, and agility as they seemingly effortlessly climb over this wall. We sleep at Karanga Camp tonight.
Day 4
KARANGA CAMP – BARAFU CAMP: 3.3KM/2 MI | 3-4HRS | ALPINE DESERT Elevation: 4034m/13,235ft to 4662m/15,295ft Altitude gained: 628m
Once you reach Barafu Camp, you will have finished the South Circuit, which provides a range of stunning views of the peak from many different directions. As we prepare for the summit, we eat dinner early then rest. We sleep at Barafu Camp tonight.
Day 5
BARAFU CAMP – SUMMIT: 4.86KM /3MI UP | 5-7HRS | – MWEKA CAMP: 11.5KM /7.1MI DOWN | 5-6HRS | GLACIERS, SNOW CAPPED SUMMIT Elevation: 4662m/15,295ft to 5895m/19,341ft Altitude gain: 1233m Descent to 3106m/10,190ft Altitude lost: 2789m
Ahead of the early morning start between midnight and two in the morning, anticipation is growing. The most difficult part of the trek is now, both psychologically and physically.
Between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, we make our way to the summit while attempting to remain warm and concentrated on the incredible sense of success that awaits us.
During your little respite here, you will be rewarded with the most stunning dawn by moving switchback in a northwesterly direction and ascending over thick scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. On the summit, hikers that go more quickly may see the sunrise. Snow is probably going to be there the entire time you climb the last hour to Uhuru Peak from here.
Congratulations, you have finally arrived to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the whole African continent, one step at a time!
We pause to celebrate this amazing achievement after photographs, parties, and perhaps a few happy tears. After stopping at Barafu for lunch and a quick respite, we start our descent toward Mweka Camp. For unfriendly loose gravel and volcanic ash terrain, we highly advise gaiters and walking poles.
Next enjoy your final evening on the mountain while taking a well-earned nap. We sleep at Mweka Camp tonight.
Day 6
MWEKA CAMP – MWEKA GATE – MOSHI: 9.1KM/5.7MI |3-4HRS | RAINFOREST Elevation: 3106m/10,190ft to 1633m/5358ft Altitude lost: 1473m
It's time to bid your crew farewell after breakfast and a heartfelt ceremony of gratitude and team bonding. The Mweka Park Gate is where you will pick up your summit certificates as we resume our descent. The terrain is wet, muddy, and steep due to the significantly warmer temperature, and we strongly advise trekking poles and gaiters.
The drive back to your hotel in Moshi will take about 30 minutes from the gate, where a car will be waiting for you in Mweka village. You now can enjoy supper, festivities, and a long-overdue hot shower!
Prior to being transferred to your journey home, safari, or leisurely excursion to Zanzibar, you will spend the night in a Kilimanjaro hotel.
