⭐️KILIMANJARO MARANGU 5 DAY TREK⭐️

Because it can be completed in fewer days and features permanent sleep huts at the campgrounds, the Marangu Route, also referred to as the tourist route, is more well-liked. From Kibo Hut, the ascent to Uhuru Peak is steep and passes Gilman's Point. This route often has a lower summit success rate because it is shorter with a steeper ascent and less time for acclimatization. The only path where the ascending and descending routes are combined, increasing traffic, is this one..

Duration: 5 days
Difficulty: Medium
Scenery: Good
Traffic: High

Itineraries

Day 1

MARANGU GATE – MANDARA HUTS: 7K/4.3MI | 4-5 HRS | RAINFOREST

You can reach the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate after a 45-minute journey from Moshi through welcoming mountainside villages.

We will wait patiently for the issuance of our permits while seeing the flurry of activity as other crews get ready for the voyage ahead.

As well as enjoy the beautiful rainforest scenery and windy trails while your guide tells you about the local flora and fauna and natural wildlife.

The trail can be rather muddy and treacherous at these lower altitudes. Trekking poles and gaiters are highly advised.

Day 2

MANDARA HUTS – HOROMBO HUTS: 11KM/6.8MI | 6-8HRS | MOORLAND

Following a restful night's sleep and a filling breakfast, we leave the rain forest and continue on a climbing path through heathland looking for big lobelias and groundsels.

From this point, the track climbs steadily into open moorlands where small shrubs are the main vegetation. Next we pause halfway for lunch and enjoy the marvelous views of Mawenzi.

Late afternoon, we arrive at our hut located beneath the amazing Kibo Summit viewpoint. At this time, the weather starts to get colder.

Day 3

HOROMBO HUTS- KIBO HUTS: 10KM/6MI | 6-8HRS | SEMI-DESERT

After breakfast, we continue through a shrinking heathland that eventually turns into a lunar landscape as we approach the broad saddle that connects Mawenzi and Kibo.

You can take a look at the summit climb up Kibo that you will be beginning in a few hours while we take a break for lunch and later when you pass this unexpectedly large saddle.

Day 4

KIBO HUTS – SUMMIT: 4KM /2.5 MI UP | 5-7HRS | – HOROMBO HUTS: 14KM/9MI DOWN | 5-6HRS | GLACIERS, SNOW CAPPED SUMMIT

Ahead of the early morning start between midnight and two in the morning, anticipation is growing. The most difficult part of the trek is now, both psychologically and physically.

Between glaciers, we make our way to the summit in switchback formation while attempting to remain warm and concentrated on the incredible sense of success that awaits us. With a switchback motion, we ascend through heavy scree and possibly snow towards Gillmans Point on the crater rim. On the summit, hikers that go more quickly may see the sunrise. Snow is probably going to be there the entire time you climb the last hour to Uhuru Peak from here.

Congratulations, you have finally arrived to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the whole African continent, one step at a time!

We pause to celebrate this amazing achievement after photographs, parties, and perhaps a few happy tears. We begin our steep descent down to Horombo Huts, stopping at Kibo Huts for lunch and a very brief rest. For unfriendly loose gravel and volcanic ash terrain, we highly advise gaiters and walking poles.

Next enjoy your final evening on the mountain while taking well-earned rest. We sleep at Horombo Huts tonight.

Day 5

HOROMBO HUTS – MARANGU GATE – MOSHI: 18KM/11MI |6-7HRS | RAINFOREST

It's time to bid your crew farewell after breakfast and a heartfelt ceremony of gratitude and team bonding. We continue the descent down stopping at the Mandara Huts for lunch. Remember to tip your guides, cooks, and porters, since you will be leaving them here.

The MaranguPark Gate is where you will pick up your summit certificates as we resume our descent. The terrain is wet, muddy, and steep due to the significantly warmer temperature, and we strongly advise trekking poles and gaiters.

The drive back to your hotel in Moshi will take about 30 minutes from the gate, where a car will be waiting for you. You now can enjoy supper, festivities, and a long-overdue hot shower!

Prior to being transferred to your journey home, safari, or leisurely excursion to Zanzibar, you will spend the night in a Kilimanjaro hotel.
